Alphabet delivered its fastest revenue growth in five years and its stock fell more than 10% after hours. Both facts came from the same quarter.
Revenue reached $127.58 billion, up 25% year over year, the fastest pace since 2021. Google Cloud more than doubled to $30.7 billion, a 103% increase, with operating income up 209% and operating margin widening to 36.2%, answering investors who thought that margin had peaked last quarter. Consolidated operating income rose 30% to $40.58 billion, though that missed the $43.19 billion analysts expected.
The problem was cash. Capital expenditures hit a record $51.4 billion, against $24.0 billion a year earlier and $42.29 billion of operating cash flow. Free cash flow came in at −$9.07 billion, far below the −$2.70 billion consensus and deeper than the −$5.86 billion reported in Q2. Free cash flow margin swung from +23.9% a year ago to −7.1%.
Reported EPS of $2.12 understates the operating picture. An $8.66 billion paper loss on equity holdings cut 55 cents from earnings; adjusted EPS was $2.67 against a $3.02 estimate.
What it means
Management guided annual capex above $200 billion for 2026 and beyond $300 billion in 2027, so the burn is structural, not a one quarter spike.
For allocators, The question is duration: how many quarters of negative free cash flow the market will fund before demanding evidence of payback. Shares closed at $324.89 on 28 October, then traded near $291 after hours.
